Study Finds Consumers Approve of Proposed Fuel Economy Standards

The United States federal government has proposed a new plan for a corporate average fuel economy standard (CAFE) for the years 2017 through 2025. Under the plan, the government is recommending a CAFE standard of 54.5 miles per gallon by 2025 for passenger vehicles.

LeaseTrader.com conducted an online poll during the week of July 18, and received responses from 1,138 drivers across the country.

72.4% of drivers overall say they are in favor of higher fuel standards, but that percentage drops to just 34.5% approval if it means vehicle prices will rise more than $2,000.

69.8% of drivers believe automakers already have the technology to significantly improve new car fuel economy, but just 47.2% believe the Big 3 domestic carmakers can be profitable under these new fuel economy standards.
