Gizmag remembers Carroll Shelby: Texas chicken farmer, racer, philanthropist, automotive entrepreneur

Gizmag put
together a stunning photographic and written tribute to automotive legend
Carroll Shelby
, who passed away last week at 89.

Shelby burst onto the scene, as Gizmag notes, becoming
a dominant figure in the racing world.

He was courted by the top car
manufacturers in the world to drive for them, including Ferrari. Shelby
captured three national sports car championships in the United States, earned a
spot on the Aston-Martin team in Europe, won the 24 Hours of Le Mans and set
land speed records at Bonneville Salt Flats. Twice, he was named Sports
Illustrated’s “Driver of the Year.”

The engaging, colorful man was also well-known as a chicken
farmer. To wit:

Shelby’s colourful persona and
working class beginnings made him an endearing success story. Most famously, he
is known as a former chicken farmer because one day he had to work late and did
not have time to change from his chicken farming overalls before a race. When
the amount of publicity he received was much greater than normal thanks to his
overtalls, he made them his trademark as a driver, even wearing them onto the
victory dias when he won Le Mans in 1959.

And who can forget the designer and man behind the Shelby
Cobra vehicles, and who worked with Ford for decades:

“At Ford, Carroll Shelby will
always be remembered as an innovator, a performance vehicle legend but most
importantly an incredible partner and close friend for more than 60 years,”  Edsel Ford II told Gizmag.

It’s quite the read with a stunning array of photos of
Shelby through the years.
