Antique Hunting on the Beach Loop: Willamette Valley and Northern Oregon Coast Road Trip

While the long days of summer last, take advantage and spend a weekend exploring the weird and wonderful things you’ll find antique hunting your way to the Oregon Coast. From Sherwood to Lincoln City and all the way up the coast, swinging by shops in Rockaway and Cannon Beaches you’ll find treasures and trinkets all along the route of one of Oregon’s best antiquing byways. Escaping to the beach isn’t just a chance to shop for new fall décor or hunt out a great bargain; it’s also the perfect way to the beat the heat and soak in the cool ocean breezes for a few days. You can enjoy this road trip loop over a two-day weekend, or linger a little longer to savor the sweetness of summer on the coast.
Follow our itinerary for some great finds, but be aware that many antique shops are open irregular hours and it’s not uncommon for shops to shut-down and reappear elsewhere, so be sure to call ahead or refer to the company website (many are provided below) if you’re set on a certain shop.

About Leif’s Summer Roadtrip Series

This summer we will publish a series of articles that combine two of my greatest passions; cars and the Pacific Northwest.

Should you decide to try one or a few of the overnight trips we’ll present, you and your travel companions will enjoy The Area’s less widely known but truly iconic scenery and experiences en route to your destination.

If you find these articles valuable or have suggestions for new ideas or improvements, we would love to hear from you. Please email us at webmail@leifs.com.

Route: McMinnville, Grand Ronde, Lincoln City, Rockaway, Cannon Beach, and Seaside

The Drive:Following OR-99 and OR-18 west to the coast, you’ll pass through a string of suburbs and rural regions and watch the landscape open up to grassy hills and farms dotted with orchards, before entering the forests of the Coast Range and driving just a few miles south on US-101 to Lincoln City after about 2 hours and 5 minutes (88 miles) from Portland. If you leave on a Friday evening from the Portland area, be sure to plan for traffic through Newberg and Dundee, or take the scenic route, following Scholl’s Ferry Road (OR-210) through Tigard. With this route you’ll head south on the Hillsboro Highway (OR-219) coming down to spectacular views of the valley from Bald Peak, before heading west on the Yamhill-Newberg Highway (OR-240) and south on NE Abbey Road, where you’ll rejoin the route on OR-18 just south of Lafayette. You’ll extend your trip by about 15 minutes (10 miles), but the views and open roads will be worth it.

From Lincoln City, head north hugging the coastline on US-101, stopping along the way in Rockaway Beach and Cannon Beach before reaching Seaside, 2 hours and 7 minutes (92 miles) north. Your route back to Portland from Seaside will be a little shorter, about 1 hour and 31 minutes (78 miles) following US-26 along the windy lanes of the Coast Range and past the tiny towns and rural stretches of highway before entering Portland through Hillsboro.
