VW project: Odds and ends--TVs change spots; floorboard, dashboard molded

The front seat floorboard, completely hand-crafted and molded for a custom fit, was slated into the 1968 Volkswagen Microbus Thursday afternoon.

“We’re still looking at a July finish,” said Robert who has been working on the project for months now.

Robert is also making a couple of changes to the placement of the TVs, one will be installed in the rear where the back hatch opens while the other will fold down in the middle of the van, allowing for optimum viewing from back-seaters.

“We didn’t want to take away from the mural,” said Robert, referring to the painting of the van, which will take place at a later date.

The bus was completely stripped down before a monumental undertaking began. The 1968 relic will boast the latest in green technology—including a solar panel on its roof—and current era technologies like TVs and a lithium-ion battery.

Robert created the floorboard with new custom tools that ensure the highest quality craftsmenship.

Recently, the roof was cut open to make way for the hand-formed solar panel. It’s all a part of a custom project, which is slated to be finished in the summer of 2012. Throughout the process, we will be updating photos and video here.
