VW project: GPS unit, holder part of electronic hub of bus
The Volkswagen microbus project—Leif’s plan to customize the ’68 relic into a state-of-the-art beauty complete with lithium-ion batteries—is rolling along toward its scheduled summer completion.
Two small updates this week from Robert, who has been working on the ambitious job for several months now after the bus was completely stripped from its original makeup.
A handmade cylinder wraps around the steering column on the driver’s side, while in the center, a mechanism connecting the GPS to the dashboard was created. The GPS unit—a hefty Best Buy investment—will not only help navigate the vehicle, it will serve as the De facto hub for everything electronic—odometer, speedometer, accessing the TVs and more.
The van’s motor should be here any day now and we’ll continue to update you on the progress at leifs.com/vw. You can also check out a photographic history of the project here.
