VW News

The Volkswagen microbus project—Leif’s plan to customize the ’68 relic into a state-of-the-art beauty complete with lithium-ion batteries—is rolling along toward its scheduled summer completion.

A couple brief updates to the 1968 Volkswagen microbus; for those of you who haven’t been following, the project is Leif’s ambitious customs undertaking that will turn the classic vehicle into a state-of-the-art beauty with solar power and lithium-ion batteries.

The expansive, green, solar and lithium-ion battery powered Volkswagen is just six short months from completion and the ideas going forward are plentiful in Leif’s mind.

A couple of small updates to Leif’s ambitious custom-designed 1968 Volkswagen Microbus on this chilly Monday in the Pacific Northwest.

The front seat floorboard, completely hand-crafted and molded for a custom fit, was slated into the 1968 Volkswagen Microbus Thursday afternoon.

“We’re still looking at a July finish,” said Robert who has been working on the project for months now.

A month after the TVs were mounted in the rear of the 1968 Volkswagen Microbus—Leif’s ambitious plan to customize the relic into a state-of-the-art alternative fuel 21st Century beauty—the roof was cut open in preparation for the installation of the solar panel, which will help power the car.

Leif's is transforming a classic 1968 Volkswagen microbus into a state-of-the-art alternative fuel drivetrain, encompassing the latest in electric motors, lithium-ion batteries, solar panels on the expansive roof, and a natural gas-fired generator to increase the van’s range. That’s the good news for the underside of the van. The old Microbus will be taken down to bare metal, repaired to like-new condition, and then built back up into a showpiece of modern technology and style.

Another week into Leif’s Volkswagen project and the second flat screen TV is getting installed.

“One on each side,” said Robert, who continues his trek on the expansive undertaking, which is slated to be finished in July, 2012.

TVs adorn the inside, DVD players will be hidden to the eye but pop out at a moment’s notice and a foldout in the rear will hold a grill for all your tailgating needs. Yes, it’s six weeks into the Volkswagen project, and the solar panel—a key aspect of the car’s environmental-friendly nature—is being hand-formed for a custom fit.

“It’s the most challenging thing so far,” said Robert, who has worked solely on the van for the past month.

It’s a 1968 Volkswagen Type 2 Transporter – commonly known as a microbus. The venerable VW Microbus was the vehicle that transported some of the first people to care deeply about pollution and saving the Earth. In the decades since 1968, almost everyone has come around to that way of thinking. So to honor the vehicle that started it all, Leif Hansen has a plan.
